August 5, 2016

Dear Guadalupe Families,

I’d like to welcome all of you to the 2016-2017 school year and introduce myself. My name is Chris Izor and I am honored to be Guadalupe’s new principal this year. I am a long time resident of this area and the Union School District.  My wife Julie and I have two children who have attended Union schools. My son Jacob will be attending Branham High School this year as a sophomore and my daughter Jenna will be a 7th grader at Dartmouth. I have been in education for the past 17 years having been a teacher, vice principal, elementary school principal, and a district office administrator. I have heard fantastic things about the Guadalupe community and look forward to meeting all of the students and families in the coming days.

The first day of school is right around the corner!  School officially starts on Wednesday August 17th.  Many of our teachers have been in and out through the summer getting their rooms ready to welcome students back.

New this year, we have included access to the Powerschool Parent Portal. By logging into this portal you will be able to see your child’s class placement without having to come down to the school. If you still wish to come down,  2nd – 5th grade class lists will be posted on the cafeteria windows at Guadalupe. All class lists will be available online and at school on Tuesday, August 16th at 4:00 pm. Kindergarten and 1st Grade class assignments will be given at their Back To School Night on August 15th.  A separate letter will be mailed to Kindergarten and First grade families with more information.

Please trust that we have worked diligently to place each child based on teaching style, combinations of students and student needs. We ask that you wait two weeks to approach the office if you have concerns about your child’s placement. History has taught us that our staff really does know how to place students effectively. Please also note that student schedules can fluctuate as enrollment changes.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT (for parents only):

Our Back-To-School night (2nd – 5th grade) will be Wednesday, August 24th from 6:00 – 7:45 p.m. (see schedule at the end of this letter).   You will have the opportunity to visit your child’s classroom, begin to form a relationship with the classroom teacher, as well as learn about the grade level curriculum, special classes, classroom technology, field trips, and activities. Back to School Night for Kindergarten and First grade is Monday, August 15th. Please see those times in the schedule at the end of this letter.

Here are some communication forums to look out for:

Please ask your child for their Friday Folder each Friday. This folder will include information regarding school and district programs or items from the teacher. Parents are asked to return the Friday Folder to school the following Monday. All other information, such as afterschool programs and community offerings will be posted on our website under the “News” tab. We are attempting to reduce the amount of paper we send home so that you should be getting much less paper in your Friday Folders.

Please signup to receive the Guadalupe Gazette newsletter on the homepage of our website under “Quick Links”.

Visit the Guadalupe website at frequently to get up-to-date information about events, reminders, programs, and important information about the school.

Take a look at the Guadalupe School Handbook on the website (under Parent Info) for essential information about Guadalupe’s programs, procedures, and policies. This is a great place to find our absence and tardy procedures as well as independent study information.

This year, we will continue to use the Remind texting service as another way to communicate with families.  Please look at the directions below to add yourself to your grade level group. If you already signed up last year, your codes should still be valid and you do not need to sign up again. This is a great way to quickly receive pertinent, Guadalupe information. If you have students in multiple grade levels, just add both groups (even though some messages may be received twice).

To receive messages for your grade level group, you will need to send a text.

Then hit send. Soon you will receive confirmation you have been added to our groups.

Guadalupe Behavior Expectations:

As you enter the campus, you will recognize our ROARS banners. The Guadalupe team agreed that, like academics, behavior expectations should be taught to all students and that students should be positively recognized for following school expectations. We believe that all expectation language should be clear, concise and used amongst all staff. Therefore, we continue to utilize a set of school-wide expectations that all students and staff can easily follow:

Guadalupe ROARS:

You will notice our ROARS posters around the school giving explicit language for our varying campus areas. Our teachers will be teaching these expectations to all students over the first few weeks of school and then students will be positively recognized for practicing positive behaviors with our Gold Cards. We encourage you to practice this language at home with your child(ren) and respect the rules in our learning zones as well.

Our school day for first through fifth grades begins at 8:15 am every day. Kindergartners begin at 8:05 (am class) or 11:30 (pm class). Please be sure that your child/children attend school daily and on time.  All students who arrive after the arrival time must sign in at the office with a parent. If your child is sick, please report the absence by 9:30 am by calling the 24-hour student absence hotline at 408.927.9452.

School is dismissed at 2:40 (1st- 5th) every day except Wednesday (school is dismissed at 1:15). Unless attending an after-school program, students are to leave campus immediately after school as there is no supervision. Students accompanied by an adult may return to our upper campus playgrounds only. The lower playgrounds are off limits. Please be respectful of our teachers and our after school programs as well.

School dismissal for kindergarten is 11:25 (am classes) and 2:50 (pm classes). Afternoon kindergarten classes will have a modified Wednesday schedule. *All afternoon kindergarten students will attend school from 9:40 am until 1:00 pm every Wednesday beginning August 24th.

In order to maintain a safe campus, please drive slowly, safely, and courteously! Whenever possible, please carpool, bike or walk to school. If you drive, please park in the streets.  If you must park in the parking lot, please only park in the visitor spots; please do not park in staff parking spots. We appreciate your consideration in this matter.

Students may only be dropped off in the morning and picked up in the afternoon in the front of the school at the flagpole on Vera Cruz. You may also park your car and walk students.  Due to lack of supervision and potentially dangerous driving conditions on Coleman, the gate near Champions will remain locked before, during, and after school. Champions staff will open the gate for parents who drop off and pick up children at the daycare, before 7:30 am and after 3:30 pm.

Refer to the School Handbook for specific Street & Parking Lot Safety Procedures. If you observe any unsafe driving on the streets near our school, please take a minute to complete a SJPD Traffic Enforcement Request form (on our website homepage under Quick Links).

Please consider donating school supplies (such as glue sticks, pencils, erasers) to your child’s class. Supply lists for each grade level can be found on the Guadalupe website under Student Corner > Supply Lists.

Throughout the year, Guadalupe offers many opportunities for students to explore their interests beyond the school day. Students may choose to participate in a plethora of exploratory classes, including band, Mad Science, Art, Lego Engineering, Maker Space, Yoga, Theater, Rhythm and Percusssion, just to name a few of the exciting classes from which to choose. Check the school website under the “News” tab for registration information throughout the year. Scholarships are available for many programs.

All parents are automatically members of the Home and School Club. Parent involvement is paramount to the success of Guadalupe and we hope you will help support our programs and events throughout the school year.  Please join us at the Back to School Coffee in the cafeteria at 8:15 on the first day of school!
