August 1, 2017

Dear Guadalupe Families,

Are you excited to kick off the 2017-2018 school year? I hope that summer has been good to you and your family. I had a fantastic summer with my family traveling to the mountains and stopping by Universal Studios Hollywood! I hope you had a chance to do something fun and relaxing. Our school is growing and we are excited to welcome all new and returning families. The teachers have been in and out this summer and are getting rooms ready for the first day of school. Please join me in welcoming our new School Administrative Assistant, Tiffany Borgia. Mrs. Borgia is stepping in for Mrs. Levin who took a position at our district office. Mrs. Borgia has many years working in schools, most recently as an administrative assistant at Ida Price Middle School in the Cambrian School District. She is excited to join our community and can’t want to meet all the families.

School officially starts on Wednesday, August 16th. Wednesdays are early release days for grades 1-5, so please remember to make arrangements to pick up your students at 1:15 PM on the first day of school.

CLASS PLACEMENT INFORMATION: PowerSchool Only This Year!

Families in grades 2-5 will only be able to access their class placements through the PowerSchool Portal on Tuesday, August 15th at 4:00 PM.
We will not be posting class lists in the cafeteria windows this year. Families can access the PowerSchool Portal by following the directions on the includedform. Byloggingintothisportal, youwillbeabletoseeyourchild’sclassplacementwithouthavingtocomedowntotheschool. Kindergarten and 1s t Grade class assignments will be given at Back to School Night.. A separate letter will be mailed to Kindergarten and First grade families with more information.

Please trust that we have worked diligently to place each child based on teaching style, combinations of students and student needs. We ask that you wait two weeks to approach the office if you have concerns about your child’s placement. History has taught us that our staff really does know how to place students effectively. Please also note that student schedules can fluctuate as enrollment changes.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT (for parents only):

Our Back-To-Schoolnight(2n d–5t hgrade)willbe Wednesday,August23rdfrom6:00–7:45 p.m .(seescheduleattheendofthisletter). Youwillhave the opportunity to visit your child’s classroom and learn about the grade level curriculum, special classes, classroom technology, and other activities.

Back to School Night for Kindergarten and First grade is Monday, August 14th. Please see those times in the schedule at the end of this letter. COMMUNICATION:
Here are some communication forums to look for.

Please ask your child for their Friday Folder each Friday. This folder will include information regarding school and district programs or items from the teacher. Parents are asked to return the Friday Folder to school the following Monday. All other information, such as afterschool programs and community offerings will be posted on our website under the “News” tab.

Visit the Guadalupe website at guadalupe.unionsd.org frequently to get up-to-date information about events, reminders, programs, and important information about the school.

Take a look at the Guadalupe School Handbook on the website (under Parent Info) for essential information about Guadalupe’s programs, procedures, and policies. This is a great place to find our absence and tardy procedures as well as independent study information.

This year, we will continue to use the REMIND texting service as another way to communicate with families. Please look at the directions below to add yourself to your grade level group. If you already signed up last year, your codes should still be valid and you do not need to sign up again. This is a great way to quickly receive pertinent, Guadalupe information. If you have students in multiple grade levels, just add both groups (even though some messages may be received twice).

To receive messages for your grade level group, you will need to send a text. Follow the directions on the next page.

Message: Enter your grade Code Message below and hit send. You will receive a confirmation that you have been added to the group.

Guadalupe Behavior Expectations:
As you enter the campus, you will recognize our ROARS banners. The Guadalupe team agreed that, like academics, behavior expectations should be taught to all students and that students should be positively recognized for following school rules. Our staff will be teaching these expectations to all students over the first few weeks of school and then students will be recognized and rewarded with Gold Cards for practicing positive behaviors. We encourage you to practice this language at home with your children and respect the rules in our learning zones as well.

ATTENDANCE AND ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE TIMES & PROCEDURES:
The school day for first through fifth grades begins at 8:15 am every day . Kindergartners begin at 8:05 (am class) or 11:30 (pm class). Please be sure that your child/children attend school daily and on time. All students who arrive after the arrival time must sign in at the office with a parent. If your child is sick, please report the absence by 9:30 am by calling the 24-hour student absence hotline at (408) 927-9452.

School is dismissed at 2:40 (1s t - 5t h ) every day except Wednesday (school is dismissed at 1:15). Unless attending an after-school program, students are to leave campus immediately after school as there is no supervision . Students accompanied by an adult may return to our upper campus playgrounds only. The lower playgrounds are off limits. Please be respectful of our teachers and our after school programs as well.

School dismissal for kindergarten is 11:25 (am classes) and 2:50 (pm classes). Afternoon kindergarten classes will have a modified Wednesday schedule. * All afternoon kindergarten students will attend school from 9:40 am until 1:00 pm every Wednesday beginning August 23rd.

STREET & PARKING LOT SAFETY REMINDERS:
In order to maintain a safe campus, please drive slowly, safely, and courteously! Whenever possible, please carpool, bike or walk to school. If you drive, please park in the streets. If you must park in the parking lot, please only park in the visitor spots; please do not park in staff parking spots. We appreciate your consideration in this matter.

Students may only be dropped off in the morning and picked up in the afternoon in the front of the school at the flagpole on Vera Cruz. You may also park your car and walk students. Due to lack of supervision and potentially dangerous driving conditions on Coleman, the gate near Champions will remain locked before, during, and after school. Champions staff will open the gate for parents who drop off and pick up children at the daycare, before 7:30 am and after 3:30 pm.

Refer to the School Handbook for specific Street & Parking Lot Safety Procedures. If you observe any unsafe driving on the streets near our school, please take a minute to complete a SJPD Traffic Enforcement Request form (on our website homepage under Quick Links).

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT CLASSES
Throughout the year, Guadalupe offers many opportunities for students to explore their interests beyond the school day. Students may choose to participate in a plethora of exploratory classes, including Band, Sports, Lego engineering, Yoga, and Theater to just name a few of the exciting classes from which to choose. Check the school website under the “Programs” tab for registration information throughout the year. Scholarships are available for many programs.

HOME AND SCHOOL CLUB:
All parents are automatically members of the Home and School Club. Parent involvement is paramount to the success of Guadalupe and we hope you will help support our programs and events throughout the school year. Please join us at the Back to School Coffee in the cafeteria at 8:15 on the first day of school!
